Authorities told about Islamabad donkey meat raid, a “foreign national” was taken into custody and about 1,000 kg of donkey meat was seized from an unlawful slaughterhouse by the local government.

The Islamabad Food Authority IFA said that the confiscation occurred as a result of a combined raid on a farmhouse in the Tarnol area by the IFA, the Islamabad district administration, and local police.

An IFA team was destroying the meat recovered from the location under the direction of Deputy Director Dr. Tahira Siddique, while 50 live donkeys were also rescued from the site.

According to a Pakistan Bureau of Statistics (PBS) report, published in June, the number of donkeys in Pakistan has risen by 109,000 over the past year to 6.047 million, up from 5.938 million, the news.

The captured foreign national who was in charge of the operation has been the subject of a police complaint, and the authorities are now looking for his local helpers.

“A foreign national was detained at the location which has been sealed, and an investigation is ongoing,” Muhammad Nasir Butt, a representative for the Islamabad district administration.

“We will carry out additional Islamabad donkey meat raids based on the results of the investigation, and we are also working to locate any local people who were involved.”

However, the meat was packed for “export to a neighboring country,” according to Butt.

“The administration is looking into the matter from several angles, but we have not yet discovered any evidence that meat is being used in the local restaurants,” he said.

Police report: 

The farmhouse was not permitted to handle donkey meat or export live donkeys, as stated in a police report.

The report stated that, under sections 11, 12, 13, and 14 of the Islamabad Capital Territory Food Safety Act of 2021. Legal action will be brought against the relevant people on the basis of the supply and sale of haram meat because there are no documents for processing it.

When it comes to the size of its donkey population, Pakistan is consistently ranked among the top nations in the world. The most recent economic survey indicates that the nation’s donkey population increased to 6 million in the fiscal year 2024–25, which concluded in June, from 5.9 million in 2023–24.

A container with the number SEGU-3154225 that was cleared from the South Asia Pakistan Port (SAPT) terminal in Karachi was identified by the Collectorate. According to the export documents, 285 packages of leather items were transported to China.

China has a strong demand for the meat and skins of the animal. In China, donkey hide-derived gelatin is highly valued because it is used in the traditional medicinal cure known as Ejiao. Donkey meat and burgers are available for sale at a number of Chinese restaurants.

The IFA’s main goal was to ensure that Islamabad had access to safe and high-quality food, according to Dr. Siddique, who was a member of the group that stormed the farmhouse.

The IFA cited her as saying, “We are implementing a zero-tolerance approach against anyone who puts public health at risk.”
